— No 1 : The Food Issue —
About Garstig
Garstig is a new publication about women, created by women.
This first issue is focussed on the food industry,
and is dedicated to giving female chefs across the country a voice.
We have aimed to draw attention to the people behind the food, while highlighting the underrepresentation of women in the professional kitchen across the UK. Within the UK food industry, only 18% of chefs are female. To this day women are still classified as ‘cooks’, where as ‘chef’ is only seen as a male role. Behind closed doors, these women are pushed around and harassed. Their working environment is often hostile, or not equal between the sexes by any means.
This is an issue that is unknown to many, and needs to finally be brought to light within society.
This issue of Garstig will not only highlight each woman’s strength, but importantly their love for cooking. Celebrating these female chefs by sharing their craft, their stories and their experiences; in the hope of inspiring other women to not give up or give in, but push back to pursue this male dominated career.
Garstig is an ongoing project between Marie-Lisette Cropp
as photographer and
Paulina Stoellger
as graphic designer and illustrator, the editing and art direction is a shared role between us. This feministic magazine will be an ongoing series, highlighting the voices of women in male dominated industries.
